May Nights Salvia
The May night salvia, or ‘Mainacht’ salvia, is a blue perennial salvia that can grow well in zones three through eight. The May night salvia has glowing purple stems that are loaded with violet purple flowers. The blooms of the May night salvia appear from June through October. Hardy in zones four through eight, the May night salvia prefers winter mulch in colder areas in order to survive.

The May night salvia prefers full sun to grow and flower properly, and will grow in average to dry garden soil. Once established, the May night salvia will be able to withstand a drought, and prefers winters to be dry. The May night salvia is often used in borders or planted in mass.

Bare root planting of the May night salvia is most successful in early spring. Plants grown from pots may be transplanted to the garden at any time during the growing season. When transplanting May night salvia from a pot into the garden, make sure to plant them at the same depth as they were in the pot. May nights salvia should be watered well until they are established.

Named 1997 Perennial Plant of the Year, the May night salvia will grow up to thirty-six inches in height, and eighteen inches wide. The May night salvia is very attractive to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Planted as a border, the May night salvia is also very useful in deer prevention.
